Leeufontein smallholder shoots dead armed stranger in self-defence

The unknown man had ambushed the smallholder and pointed a revolver: and was shot dead said police

2010-02-09 Virginia Keppler reports in Beeld newspaper that the owner of a smallholding in Leeufontein northeast of Pretoria has shot dead an armed robber when the man pointed a gun at him night before last. Police captain Jan Sepato said they have opened a criminal investigation into the death as required by law, but no arrests were made.

The fifty-year-old smallholder arrived back at his homestead at around 10pm on Sunday-night, parked his vehicle outside his gate and went in to eat.

He then stepped outside to park his vehicle in the carport when a man ambushed him — with a firearm pointed at his face. “Luckily the owner had his own firearm with him, pulled it out quickly and shot at the gunman’ said Sepato.

Police said the suspected robber, about 40, died on the scene. Police found a 9mm Norinco pistol and cartridges with the shot man.

Leeufontein chairman of the Area Protection Action in Leeufontein said it was like an old Western movie scene: it’s either him or you.’

He warned anyone planning to break in at Leeufontein smallholdings or carry out armed robberies to stay away. “If you try it in Leeufontein you will be taken out. That’s the message we send out. We are alert and carry out frequent patrols too.’

Four men destroyed my family within a second – handicapped vet Dr Duncan Prinsloo

Top veterinarian Dr. Duncan Prinsloo (right with cane) and farmer Herman de Jager paid homage to their family members who were murdered in two farm attacks  at the solemn memorial service for the country’s many murdered farmers, held at Fort Schanskop in Pretoria on Feb 6 2010.

  “A wonderful family was destroyed within a second when four men burst into our bedroom and without saying a word, shot dead my wife right next to me.’ said Dr Prinsloo. The same bullet which killed his wife Laetitia also struck his back and left him permanently disabled.

“I praise the Lord’s mercy for giving me the courage to continue. One could easily just lie down and give up after such an event. He said his entire family was deeply affected by the traumatic farm attack. His youngstest daughter especially as she had come across her parents a day after the murder – her mother was dead in the bed, her father was injured, paralysed on the floor.

And he no longer is the hardworking, healthy veterinarian which helped farmers in his practice.

Now, 45 people who worked for him and lived on his farm now also are facing unemployment because Dr Prinsloo is  no longer able to carry on his practice fulltime. He told the memorial service that he is now planning to sell his farm – he just cannot manage it on his own. And, he said, he has been turned into a prisoner in his own homestead  – and it looks like one. “If you step outside at night, the fear is inside you. You cannot sleep because every sound you hear wakes you up.’

He is also determined that no unknown man who walks into his home and threatens him will ever leave it unscathed again: 

“It’s expected of me to first ask a a burglar at that time of the day what he is doing in my home – and the reply I would probably get would be a bullet,’ he said.

Herman de Jager, left, whose 65-year-old dad Piet was shot dead on his farm Laatsgevonden in Levubu in September 2003, said during the same memorial service that he ‘hopes one day to be able to forgive the men who murdered my father so that I can forgive myself for the hatred I now carry inside of me.’

Only minutes after five-year-old Lauren Bezuidenhout had said her little bedtime-prayer: ‘Thank you dear Jesus for our nice new home and that we are so happy’, her unarmed dad Bossie, 45, was shot dead by armed attackers on the ground-floor of their new, high-security Nelspruit home.

Mr Bezuidenhout, wife Karen 39, and their children Lauren and Jarrod, 11, had just had milk-shakes in the kitchen at 8.30pm together before going to bed, while grandmom Tina, 65, was busy elsewhere in the new Shandon Estates double-storey dream-home they had just moved into.

A family friend, Mrs Karin Visagie, said Mr Bezuidenhout had gone downstairs while the children were being put to bed. Loud shouting and a shot were heard, and it was found that a bullet fired into his neck had killed the father of two, probably by ‘burglars’, she said.

His widow turns 40 years old this Wednesday and her husband was planning to surprise her with a romantic weekend, said Mrs Visagie.

Her husband Ronnie had been Bossie Bezuidenhout friend of 35 years. Bossie was a graduate of the Afrikaans Rob Ferreira High School in nearby White River and it had always been his lifelong dream to return to Nelspruit. He had purchased a business from Mr Visagie a year ago.

Mr Bezuidenhout had moved from Silver Lakes, Pretoria to Nelspruit in May 2009, and his family had followed him in November after the schools closed. They moved into their ‘dream-home’ on Saturday.

Police detective-superintendent Supt. Gerrie Agenbag of the Nelspruit police said they suspect that Mr Bezuidenhout was shot dead with a revolver – a bullet-point was found at the murder scene, but there were no spent cartridges on the scene.

Mandla Mandela’s goldmine in crisis: 3 shafts flooded

2500 experienced mineworkers at the black-owned Grootvlei goldmine face homelessness, impoverishment… at a time when gold prices are hitting new heights…

Solidarity trade union warns that the black-owned Grootvlei goldmine at the east Rand is in deep trouble – with three of its five gold-producing shafts now flooded. The third shaft flooded over the weekend when water from deserted neighbouring mines started streaming into it. “The water is overwhelming us, only two of the shafts are now still working. We pump day and night and cannot keep ahead’ said a worried Fazel Bhana, financial manager, to Beeld newspaper. The mine produces about 4,000 grams of gold a day.

Its CEO is Mandla Mandela, grandson of ex-president Nelson Mandela who runs Aurora Empowerment systems – a black economic empowerment group. Aurora’s insurance company has been notified and an assessor is on site.

The government’s mines inspectorate has been informed and an official is in attendance. Aurora has sent out earthmoving equipment to build sand walls to halt the inflow of water into the mine. Aurora has received financial backing for a consortium of investors from the Far East and the Middle East. Aurora burst onto the South African gold mining scene late last year, spending R1bn buying two mines from the liquidators of Pamodzi Gold, agreeing to buy a 60% stake in DRDGOLD’s Blyvooruitzicht mine, acquiring the Primrose gold mine and most recently the ERPM gold processing plant from DRDGOLD.

The acquisitions have been met with a great deal of scepticism because all four operations are considered marginal and difficult, requiring large injections of capital. One of the Pamodzi Gold mines was the Grootvlei mine, which has a water problem, entailing continuous pumping to keep working areas dry. Johannesburg has had nearly two weeks of rain, exacerbating the water ingress at Grootvlei.

The mine normally pumps 80 million litres of water a day but has had to increase this by 50% to 120 million litres because of this. Management suspects water is pouring into the mine after a nearby river, the Blesbok, burst its banks sending water across fields and into defunct shafts outside its mining lease area. These old workings are all connected by underground tunnels.

Bhana said the government does not have any inkling of the huge crisis the gold mines in the East Rand towns of Nigel and Springs have been plunged into. At least 2500 mineworkers and their families face permanent poverty and homelessness if the government fails to honour its promise to pay the mine’s ‘pumping ‘subsidies’.

Beeld enquired with Jeremy Michaels, spokesman for the Department of Mining – but he has not replied to any of the questions sent by Beeld about this issue since September last year. Last year, the government paid more than R7-million in pumping subsidies to its previous BEE-owners, Pamodzi Gold.

Bhana said the mineworkers didn’t get their full salaries for January either – but promised that they would get them as soon as they can get an advance ‘from a Malaysian partner.’ Solidarity trade union meanwhile has convinced its members not to strike – as ‘the gold must keep coming out of the ground and then there will be no money at all to pay people’s salaries’. However Bhana told Beeld newspaper that ‘the small quantity of gold now being mined at Grootvlei is so minute that it cannot even be taken into consideration.
